Creating noise with sound reduction. durchgang is a 8 meters long passage suspended with sound absorbers.
The sound you hear is the regular sound of the City, but more quiet. Silence is one of the strongest sounds you can create. Everybody knows the uncomfortable feeling when there is suddenly a quiet moment in conversation. Using silence in the art is also a famous medium - perhaps John Cage’s 4’33 - and many more.
durchgang (German for Passage) creates a short moment that feels like a break in the soundtrack of your live. The place for the first realization was a passage in Germany, that connects two different art showrooms. When you passed the sculpture, you first time realized the noise that is around you, but your brain was filtering all the time. The passage was just one Meter wide, eight meters long and has one corner. On the floor was a sound absorbing carpet. The walls and the ceiling where coverd with special sound absorbers, that are also used in professional soundstudios. The entrance and the exit where not closed that the urban noise could get in the installation - but much more quiet. Passing durchgang felt like resetting your ears.
